Explore the wide range of TAU's research collaborations

25 June 2024

Tel Aviv University (TAU) has more than 280 academic partners in 46 countries and our thousands of international collaborations with our partners span disciplines, forms of collaboration and innovative approaches. The Lowy International School supports these different international research collaborations at TAU in a variety of ways.

International Research Projects

At any given time, there are approximately 3,500 research projects happening at TAU, funded by more than $275 million in grants per year. Our researchers are continuously working with universities and industry on joint research projects. Recently, The Lowy International School gave $750,000 to more than a dozen international research collaboration projects across faculties at TAU.

TAU’s research collaborations are additionally often centered around our 130 research centers and institutes, including pan-disciplinary centers focused on areas like artificial intelligence, nanotechnology, cyber studies, pandemics, neuroscience and climate change. Many projects feature international researchers in TAU’s lab, as well as wider collaboration with other universities. For instance, read about international PhD Purity Muchoki’s TAU experience with a major breakthrough in water-efficient agriculture, a project done in partnership with Ben Gurion University and the University of Oregon.

To help transition projects from research to industry, TAU also has several supportive centers, including RAMOT, TAU’s center for patents and for technology transfer, and TAU Ventures – a VC connected with the university. Moreover, we often collaborate with industry; through the Center for AI and Data Science at TAU (TAD), for example, Google and TAU recently launched a program focused on AI research for sustainability and education.

Joint International Research Centers

TAU also runs several joint research centers with university partners around the world. For instance, TAU and Goethe University Frankfurt recently launched a joint center for interreligious studies, which focuses on the Abrahamic faiths. TAU also joins Yale University, the University of Pennsylvania and NYU in running one of four Colton Centers – multidisciplinary centers focused on autoimmune diseases and finding a cure.

Additionally, TAU runs joint centers with a variety of organizations in Israel. For instance, with the Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center we recently launched the Alrov Center for Digital Medicine, which is focused on promoting research in digital medicine. TAU also runs Israel’s largest biomedical research and teaching framework, with 1,400 scientist-clinicians at 19 affiliated hospitals serving over two-million people.

Visiting Research Opportunities

We additionally offer several visiting or exchange program opportunities for international researchers looking to collaborate with TAU. For instance, we provide joint post-doctoral fellowships, allowing post-docs from partner institutions to research at TAU and vice-versa.

And we recently launched the Lowy Distinguished Guest Professors framework, which funds eminent experts from abroad to join us at TAU to carry out their own research, deliver some guest lectures, and participate in TAU campus life.

Jointly Taught Programs and Courses

In addition to joint research projects, there are many joint educational opportunities at TAU. Through the Johns Hopkins SAIS and TAU dual degree program, international students can receive two master’s degrees in two years: the first, through the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced Studies (SAIS) and the second from TAU.

International students can also earn two MA degrees through a joint program between Sciences-Po Lille (SPL) and TAU.  At SPL, students gain an MA in Peace, Humanitarian Action and Development, while at TAU students can choose to gain an MA in either Conflict Resolution and Mediation, Migration Studies or Sustainable Development.

Every year, TAU additionally offers a variety of jointly taught courses, where students and instructors from at least two universities come together in a multinational classroom environment. While these courses happen across disciplines, you can read about one recent course that brought together philosophy students from TAU with graduate comparative literature students from Goethe University Frankfurt.
