Program Overview

Our Hebrew language courses provide students with an essential introduction to Israel and one of the main languages spoken in the country while using geography, environment, history and culture events to learn.

Your new skills will give you the confidence to discuss the Non-Stop City that is Tel Aviv. These courses are open to current and incoming TAU students, professionals, new immigrants (olim), and anyone who would like to study Hebrew over the summer.

  • We offer several intensive 4-week ulpans per year: July, August, and January. Sometimes, there is also an intensive ulpan in September
  • We also offer a 10-week course both in the Fall and Spring semesters.
  • Each course is worth 6 credits.

Hebrew Ulpan is mandatory for Study Abroad students. As a Study Abroad Student, you do not have to apply for the Hebrew Ulpan separately, since it is already part of your program.

Hebrew Ulpan is not mandatory for incoming exchange or full-degree students

We ask that students complete a placement exam so we can successfully place each student where they belong. Students with a more advanced level (defined as Level 8 or above) can be exempt from the mandatory Ulpan component. For further information, please check out our curriculum page.

“Hebrew is often very different from students’ languages, but when students understand the core principles, they start seeing its beauty.”—Hanna Rashin, teacher of Hebrew at TAU

 Student Testimonials

Kristen Maiocco, USA

The Hebrew Summer Long Ulpan was the perfect introduction to Israel, and especially Tel Aviv. I feel way more confident navigating around the city knowing how to read and even use a bit of slang! Classes are definitely rigorous, but I got to make friends from all over the world and test my Hebrew skills at the beach!

 Visa Questions

Students who are taking a single course at TAU (who are not enrolled in an official program) may be denied a student visa by their local Israeli Consulate because the course is not classified as an official program (this primarily refers to the Fall or Spring semester Hebrew Language course).

The official Summer and Winter Ulpan may be treated differently as they are intensive programs; however, most likely students participating only in the Ulpan programs will not be eligible for a student visa. Please refer to the local Israeli Embassy near you to verify if you are eligible for a visa or not.

IMPORTANT: Starting in January 2025, visitors from visa-exempt countries are required to obtain an ETA-IL (Electronic Travel Authorization) to enter the state of Israel. An approved ETA-IL indicates that you are allowed to travel to Israel and stay for up to 90 days per visit.

All travelers to Israel must have a valid visa or ETA-IL approval before they start their journey. If you are eligible, obtaining an ETA-IL is a simple and fast process. More information on this can be found here (please refer to this link and read all the information mentioned there carefully as it is important information you should know before traveling to Israel).
