Program Overview
What is literature? What is interpretation? What is a text, or an author? These questions are at the heart of the MA in English Literature and American Studies at Tel Aviv University. Through the lens of critical theory, this two-year intensive program challenges students to rethink the role of literature in shaping, and reflecting, culture across time and geography.
From the Middle Ages to contemporary postmodern fiction, the program explores English-language texts in all their richness and complexity. Alongside core studies in English and American literature, students are exposed to the latest developments in the humanities, including
-
Cultural studies and multiculturalism
-
Psychoanalysis and post-structuralism
-
Feminist and queer theory
-
Aesthetics, semiotics, narrative theory, and more
Whether you're drawn to medieval texts or contemporary voices from across the English-speaking world, you'll explore a rich and evolving literary tradition. The program sharpens your ability to think critically, interpret complex texts, and engage with literature through a variety of theoretical frameworks.
We welcome exceptionally talented students who are highly motivated, independent thinkers with a strong interest in literature and language. Applicants should demonstrate a nuanced understanding of culture in its historical, political, and theoretical dimensions, as well as the ability to work skillfully with English in a critical and academic context.
