Full Degree Programs at Tel Aviv University
Studying for a degree at Tel Aviv University means joining a research university in the heart of the Startup Nation. Through the Lowy International School, international students and Olim can apply to full degree programs taught in English — three-year bachelor's, one- and two-year master's, dual and integration tracks, and research-track PhDs — across nine faculties: humanities, social sciences, life sciences, exact sciences, engineering, medicine, business, law, and the arts.
What every program on this page shares:
- English throughout — coursework, assessment, and thesis. Hebrew is optional, and the TAU Ulpan runs alongside for students who want to learn.
- Faculty who teach what they research — publishing scholars leading small teaching groups in the humanities and social sciences, active labs in the sciences and engineering, working practitioners in business and law.
- A structured core with room to specialize — a required backbone in each program, plus electives drawn from across your faculty and, where the program allows, from other faculties.
- Site visits, internships, and guest lectures with Israeli research institutions, government offices, and industry built into most programs.
The main campus, in Ramat Aviv, sits within reach of both the Mediterranean and downtown Tel Aviv, Israel's business hub and the center of its startup and cultural scenes.
Undergraduate / Bachelor's Programs

- Dual Degree Liberal Arts Program with Columbia University (two years in Tel Aviv, two in New York, both degrees on completion),
- Buchmann-Mehta School of Music International Program for performers.
All four are open to international students and Olim; none require prior Hebrew.

Doctoral / PhD Programs
Tel Aviv University admits international PhD candidates across every faculty. Doctoral study at TAU is research-track from day one: you work in a specific lab or research group under a supervisor, and the degree is built around your own project rather than a course sequence. Current international PhD cohorts include candidates in particle physics, cell biology, genetics, fiber optics, archaeology, history, philosophy, and the arts.
Admission runs through the supervisor. Contact a potential faculty advisor first, agree on the project together, and then apply formally through the PhD admissions committee. The PhD degree typically takes four to six years to complete. English is the working language in most departments; specific language requirements depend on the supervisor and the field.

Study in Hebrew at Tel Aviv University
International students with strong Hebrew — typically at the level of an Israeli Bagrut or a completed Ulpan Vav — can apply directly to Tel Aviv University's regular Hebrew-taught programs on the same terms as Israeli students. Admission is handled through the university's central admissions office rather than the Lowy International School.
Applicants who need to build Hebrew first can enroll in the TAU Ulpan (six-week intensive summer sessions and semester tracks) or intensive Academic Hebrew Program (TAKA).
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I apply to English-taught degree programs at Tel Aviv University?
Applications for English-taught programs at Tel Aviv University are submitted online through the Lowy International School, not through the university's central Hebrew-track admissions. Each program has its own deadline: most master's tracks run rolling admissions from October through August; the Columbia Dual Degree operates on fixed deadlines that vary by year and are published on the program page.
For graduate applications, you need a completed bachelor's degree, academic transcripts, a personal statement, English proficiency evidence, and program-specific documents such as portfolios or research proposals.
Can I study at Tel Aviv University without knowing Hebrew?
Yes. Every degree listed on this page is taught in English end-to-end — coursework, assessment, thesis, and interaction with faculty. Hebrew is not required for admission and is not required to complete the degree.
Basic Hebrew for daily life is useful and the Lowy International School offers optional Hebrew classes alongside your degree, but they don't affect your academic progress. If you want to move into a Hebrew-taught program later, the TAU Ulpan is the standard bridge.

What are the housing options for international students at Tel Aviv University?
International students choose between two paths: on-campus student dormitories in Ramat Aviv (Broshim Dorms and Einstein Dorms, run through the Lowy International School's housing office and prioritized by demand and program length) and private-market rentals in Tel Aviv (mostly in Ramat Aviv, Ramat HaChayal, and the northern neighborhoods within reach of campus). On-campus places are limited and not guaranteed; most graduate students, and many undergraduates after their first year, live in private apartments.

Do I need a student visa to study at Tel Aviv University?
Yes, most international students enter Israel on an A/2 student visa. You apply at the Israeli consulate in your home country after you've been formally admitted. The Lowy International School issues the acceptance documents the consulate requires.
Olim (new immigrants under the Law of Return) enter on a different status and don't need an A/2. A small number of nationalities have different documentation requirements or waivers. The Lowy International School's Student Visa Office handles the paperwork at the TAU end and stays with students through renewals for the length of the degree.
