Amid Lightning Research, Partnerships are Grounding

TAU is strengthening environmental research and partnerships in India, creating more opportunities for faculty and students.

Rumbling Research

Professor Colin Price, part of the Porter School of the Environment and Earth Sciences at TAU, is a world-renowned atmospheric physicist, specializing in the Earth's weather and climate, with a focus on thunderstorms, climate change, and natural hazards. Colin used his knowledge of radio wave propagation from lightning to study tropical cyclones, solar storms, and even earthquakes. He has close ties with Indian researchers, and in recent years he has also started working with researchers in India on lightning education and protection.

Due to his research and regular visits to Karunya Institute of Technology and Sciences (KITS), in India, last month Prof. Price received an honorary degree of Doctor of Science during the 26th convocation ceremony at KITS. The degree was granted after mutual faculty visits between KITS and TAU took place, and presently the two are finalizing agreements to further research cooperation and student transfers.

Industry Ties

Research partnerships and faculty visit programs are some examples of how TAU is strengthening ties with partners such as KITS. As part of this effort, TAU recently hosted a delegation of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) on campus. Welcoming CII was part of a long-standing and multifaceted relationship with several initiatives, including the India-Israel Forum. The Forum is a powerful platform that brings together industry and academia of the two countries for an annual conversation on a diverse range of acute topics such as cyber-security, agriculture technologies, waste management, energy, food and water sustainability, and R&D.

Take Part in the Environment

Aside from prolific partnerships, TAU’s research in the Environmental Studies field is widening each year. In June 2021, the University launched the multidisciplinary Center for Climate Change Action to find solutions to the global crisis. The Center collaborates with partners from industry, academia, and government, in Israel and abroad, to develop technological solutions, raise public awareness, promote environmental legislation and policy, and more.

And as for academic offerings for students, among many Research and Graduate opportunities, the Porter School of the Environment and Earth Sciences has an outstanding MA in Environmental Studies – taught in English - which provides candidates with an intensive multidisciplinary insight into environmental studies with an emphasis on Israel's unique geographic and geopolitical setting. Applications are still being accepted, and it’s a great opportunity to learn and work alongside the best professionals in the field, such as Prof. Colin Price.
