What Drives Economic Growth?

Prof. Ariel Porat, President of Tel Aviv University, and Prof. Milette Shamir, Vice President for International Affairs, invite the public to an open lecture by Professor Joel Mokyr, Nobel Laureate in Economics 2025

When: June 29, 2026, 16:30

Where: Bar Shira Hall

The lecture will be conducted in Hebrew and is open to the public.

Professor Mokyr, Robert H Strotz Professor of Arts and Sciences at Northwestern University (USA) and a senior adjunct professor at the Eitan Berglas School of Economics at Tel Aviv University, was awarded the 2025 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences for having identified the prerequisites for sustained growth through technological progress.

In the 1990s, Joel Mokyr used historical sources as one means to uncover the causes of this sustained growth. He demonstrated that if innovations are to succeed one another in a self-generating process, scientific explanations for why innovations work are needed.

Mokyr also emphasised the importance of society being open to new ideas and allowing change.
