For PhD Candidates:
Joint (Cotutelle) PhD will connect you with leading global universities and research communities.
This program expands your academic reach and opens doors to international mentorship and exceptional resources.
Joint PhD agreements are developed by the International Development Department of the Lowy International School together with the Academic Secretariat, ensuring each partnership is rigorous, well-structured, and fully approved.
What are the key benefits and requirements of the Joint (Cotutelle) PhD?
- Dual Admission: You must meet the admission criteria of both TAU and the partner university. Each student is assigned supervisors from both institutions to guide their research.
- Residency Requirement: Spend a minimum of one year at TAU, which must account for at least 30% of your overall degree period.
- Independent Defense: Complete separate thesis defenses at each institution, following their academic regulations and standards, including TAU’s guidelines.
- Tuition Management: Tuition is paid in proportion to the time spent at each university. To maintain your student status at TAU, you will need to continue paying the required annual fees, which are relatively low.

To finalize the Joint PhD agreement for a TAU student, follow the steps below in collaboration with the partnerships coordinator at the Lowy International School.
- Approve student’s eligibility: Approve the prospective student's academic credentials and eligibility for a PhD program. The student must be admitted both by a relevant Departmental Committee and by the University Committee for Research Students/Research Students Office.

- Internal Review: The partnership coordinator submits the draft to the Academic Secretariat and, if necessary, the Legal Department. The coordinator will manage and coordinate feedback between TAU and the partner until the text is finalized.
- Approval: Present the finalized draft to the Faculty PhD Committee for approval and address any feedback.
- Finalize Signing: The partnership coordinator will agree on the signing procedure with the partner and complete the agreement.
Please note that the Joint PhD Agreement must be signed by the time the student's Research Proposal is approved (the student is accepted to Stage B of their studies).
